Premier livre contenant plusiers chansons spirituelles, avec les Lamentations de Jérémie: nouvellement composées (Le Roy & Ballard, 1556) F: Pbn [RISM J454].
LMN 308 and LMN 309 are known only from the index of the Premier livre. All the other pieces survive only in the tenor, save LMN 327 “Tout honneur,” for which an alto part is extant from 1578-4 (Haultin), and LMN 318 “Au moins mon Dieu,” which, thanks to an edition by Rigaud (1568-9) has been preserved in its entirety. The text for LMN 306 “Christ est-il mort” is possibly by Clément Marot, authorship for the others is not known. The chanson spirituelles and the Lamentation settings are discussed in Chapter 42 “Sacred works printed by LeRoy & Ballard” of Clément Janequin: Life and Works.
